140 universities from both countries participated! The 3rd Forum on China-Thailand Higher Education

The 3rd Forum on China-Thailand Higher Education Cooperation and 2021 ACTU Assembly jointly organized by Jiangsu University, ACTU Secretariat, Guizhou University and East & West International Education was successfully held in the forms of onsite and online from September 24 to 25, 2021, at the permanent convention site of China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week (CAECW) in Guiyang. This forum is one of the main activities of 2021 CAECW. More than 360 representatives from over 140 universities in China and Thailand attended the meeting. The Forum runs several parallel sub forums such as “University President’s Forum”, “Forum on Sino-Thai Sustainable Agricultural and Food Development”, “Roundtable on Sino-Thai Higher Education Cooperation” and “Young Student Forum” (2021 “Zhi & Xing Guizhou” Silk Road Youth Exchange Program).

Dr. Liu Limin, Former Vice Minister of Education and President of China Education Association for International Exchange, attended the opening ceremony of the forum and said in his speech that China-Thailand educational exchanges and cooperation not only have a natural and solid foundation, but also have broad prospects and future; The “Belt and Road” Initiative should be a joint venture to create a new paradigm for exchanges and cooperation in higher education for the new era, especially in the fields of language education, innovation of vocational education cooperation, and high-quality exchanges and cooperation aiming at building a community of human destiny. 


In his opening remarks, Dr. Anek Laothamatas, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation of Thailand, thanked the Chinese government for its assistance in the fight against the pandemic, and said that the friendship between China and Thailand has a long history and the comprehensive strategic cooperation carried out in multiple dimensions has been moving forward. He believes that the application of digital technology in teaching is not only the need to deal with the epidemic, but also the need to adapt to the development of the times; He encouraged students to learn more about Asia to adapt to the trend of "Orientalization" around the world.

At the opening ceremony, MOUs and Letters of Intent were signed between Chinese and Thai universities respectively in the forms of either onsite or online manner, such as Jiangsu University and Chiang Mai University, Beijing Language and Culture University and Siam University, Guizhou University and Mae Fah Luang University, and Guizhou Institute of Technology and North-Chiang Mai University.

 

Mr. Wang Yongli, Vice-President and Secretary-General of CEAIE, Mrs. Wang Hui, Member of the Party Group of Guizhou Provincial Department of Education, Mr. Du Kewei, Director of China Center for International People-to-People Exchange of MOE, Professor Yan Xiaohong, President of Jiangsu University and ACTU Co-Chair, Professor Li Jianjun, Party Secretary of Guizhou University, Dr. Pornchai Mongkhonvanit, President of Siam University of Thailand and Co-Chair of ACTU, and Mrs. Feng Junying, Education Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches respectively.

 

At the “University President's Forum, more than ten presidents from both sides shared their views and discussed about the current situation, mode, experience and problems of China-Thailand higher education exchange and cooperation from different perspectives. Several suggestions were proposed with regard to the opportunities and challenges faced by bilateral cooperation, yet, all speakers showed optimistic and confident about a bright future for high-level and high-quality cooperation between the two sides in the new era.

 

The Forum held two parallel panel sessions, “Forum on Sino-Thai Sustainable Agricultural and Food Development” and “Roundtable on Sino-Thai Higher Education Cooperation” to explore the in-depth cooperation between the two sides in specific professional fields. A number of issues were addressed at the “Agriculture and Food Session” such as agriculture and rural development, fine variety of maize breeding, food safety, edible fungi research, etc. There were also heated discussions at the “Roundtable Session” on several issues such as curriculum development, credit transfer, mutual degree recognition, language teaching, teacher and student exchange, translation of classics, teacher education, open distance lifetime learning, subject cooperation in tourism management, and promoting cooperation on the maritime Silk Road.

Another highlight of this event is the “Young Student Forum jointly organized for foreign students in China at the same time by Guizhou University, Jiangsu University and ACTU Secretariat. It is sponsored by the China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week and branded as 2021 "Zhi & Xing Guizhou" Silk Road Youth Exchange Program - A Cultural Experience Tour in Colorful Guizhou. 18 international students from 10 countries who are currently studying in China at Tsinghua University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Jiangsu University, Jiangsu Food and Pharmaceutical Science College and Yangzhou Polytechnic College participated in this program.

 

The 8-day program arranged by the School of International Education of Guizhou University provided participants with an opportunity to perceive and experience Chinese culture in general and distinctive Guizhou regional culture in particular through lectures, workshops, field trips, cultural tours, fun games, talent shows and participation in the 2021 China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week events.

 

At the 2021 ACTU Annual Conference, Mr. E Xuewen, Secretary-General of ACTU, delivered a work report of ACTU Secretariat to the assembly and said that ACTU will further commit to promoting exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and Thai universities, and will encourage the establishment of professional committees in key disciplines of common interest by member institutions, so as to promote the continuous deepening of substantial cooperation between the two sides. President Pornchai of Siam University read out a “Call for Action” signed by several Thai universities at the conference to advocate the high-quality development of exchanges and cooperation between Thai and Chinese universities in a standardized and justified manner so as to protect the rights and interests of students and institutions. The Call was responded actively by Chinese counterparts at the meeting.


In his closing speech, Liu Baoli, Executive Secretary-General of the Organizing Committee of CAECW said that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of dialogue and cooperation between China and ASEAN. Since the first CAECW was held in 2008, it has developed into a high-profile platform for education cooperation and people to people exchanges between China and ASEAN countries with the highest degree of institutional participation, the greatest radiation and influence and the most practical cooperation achievements. This year’s theme is “Belt and Road”, “Knowledge and Action” and “Joint Efforts in Developing a Sustainable Cooperation". He congratulated ACTU on its role in promoting Sino-Thai university exchanges in this direction and acknowledged that the Forum on China-Thailand Higher Education Cooperation has created its own characteristics and became a highlight of CAECW. Professor Zhao Yutao, Vice-President of Jiangsu University and Professor Zhang Dalin, Vice-President of Guizhou University spoke at the closing ceremony and thanked all parties for their support to the forum and the hard work of the staff and volunteers. They will support to help bringing the vigorous development of ACTU and the higher education cooperation between China and Thailand to a higher level.

Participants commented that the forum was carefully planned, carefully prepared and carefully arranged, which achieved the expected results. The Forum has become a unique high-level platform for university exchanges between the two countries.
